  19.      Question:  Since the USGS is a government arm, this data should
  20.      essentially be FREE.  I know this because anything I develop as I work
  21.      for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and gov't sponsored is in the public
  22.      domain.

  24.      I believe it should be legal to upload, for example, USGS DEM maps to
  25.      Tomahawk's ftp site.  Heck, if several of us got together with someone
  26.      that could read those VAX tapes, we could purchase a whole state's
  27.      worth of DEM maps in bulk for a mere pittance.  One $ per file
  28.      perhaps?  And have them available for all to use from Tomahawk.

  40. Now for the other questions about obtaining DEM files from the USGS. At this
  41. time you may obtain, via Anonymous FTP, 1:250,000 scale DEM's. These cover a
  42. 1 degree area. The rest of the DEM's may be purchased through the Earth
  43. Science Information Center (Call 1-800-USAMAPS). These
  44. DEM's are the 7.5 minute quadrangles (same area as a topo map), 15 minute
  45. quads for Alaska and 30 minute units.

  47. The cost starts at 40$ for 1 unit (file). It drops according to quantity
  48. until you get to 6 or more which is 90$ plus 7$ per unit. These are
  49. available on 9 track tapes or 8mm tapes (from a VAX). Arrangemets can be
  50. made to receive the files via FTP if you have that capability.
